EVA Air was founded in 1989 by Evergreen Marine Corporation’s founder Chang Yung-fa. EVA Air wasn’t the first name choice for the airline. The airlines was originally going to be called Evergreen Airlines, but that name was already being used by an Oregon based airline in the United States, so EVA Airways Corporation was chosen. The major carrier is based in Taipei’s Taiwan-Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and flies all over the world, from Amsterdam to Zhengzhou.

Founded in 1989, their first flight took place in July of 1991. Kuala Lumpur was among the first cities served by EVA Air. EVA Air entered the United States market the following year with flights between Taipei and Los Angeles in 1992.

The name of the airlines is correctly pronounced as three separate letters (E-V-A) rather than “Eva” or “Ava” as it is commonly pronounced.

EVA Air is ranked the sixth-safest airline in the world and has never lost an aircraft, never had an accident, and none of their passengers have suffered an injury in its entire operating history.

In 2016, EVA Air was awarded a five-star rating by the airline tracking and reporting service Skytrak. It is a part of the Star Alliance global airline group. The five-star ranking is not only the highest ranking, but not many airlines have ever received this prestigious ranking. Only Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines and Hainan Airlines are part of this amazing ranking. Interestingly, all of the five-star rated airlines were based out of Asia. EVA Air was also voted the 3rd most loved airline in the world behind Indonesian carrier Garuda and the South Korea based airline Asiana.

Although privately owned, EVA Air is still Taiwan’s second-largest airline. EVA Air is unique in that it offers five cabin classes: Royal Laurel Class, Premium Laurel Class, Business Class, Elite Class, and Economy Class.

EVA Air partnered with Sanrio, a Japanese company that owns the rights to the popular fictional character “Hello Kitty”. The airline decided to decorate several of its planes with the “Hello Kitty” characters and symbols. This was a risky move, but it turned out to be widely popular and the campaign has been extended and expanded to other EVA airplanes. Most of the routes where these planes travel include Japanese and Hong Kong routes.

EVA Air offers one of the longest 25 flights in the world. It is from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston and flies directly to Taiwan’s capital Taipei. The flight covers 12,776 kilometers and takes is approximately 16 hours.

EVA Air is also one of many major airlines that retired its 747 “Queen of the Skies” jumbo jets and replaced them with more efficient Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s. However, they also ordered 24 787-10 Dreamliners which is Boeing’s latest and biggest airplane.

EVA’s founder Chang Yung fa who not only owns EVA Air but also Asia’s largest container fleet and the Evergreen International Hotel chain passed away in 2016 leaving an enormous Asian empire behind.

Today EVA Air connects Asia and Mainland China to Europe, North American and Oceania through 60 major business and tourist destinations. Through the Star Alliance program, they offer passengers 1330 destinations and 192 countries. They are based out of their hub at Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) in Taiwan.
